Short answer

Can I get compensation for a cancelled TAROM flight?

Yes, if TAROM told you less than 14 days before departure and the flight left from an EU or UK airport, or flew into the EU on an EU airline. You're owed €250 to €600 per passenger plus a refund or a new flight. Strikes by the airline's own staff don't excuse it.

Common pushback

What TAROM says about cancellations, and what the law says

  • We already offered you a refund.

A refund replaces your ticket. Compensation is a separate payment for the disruption, and you can get both.

  • Our crew went on strike.

Strikes by the airline's own staff are within its control, the EU Court of Justice ruled in 2021. Air traffic control strikes are a different matter.

  • You were rebooked onto another flight.

Rebooking only cancels the payment if the new flight departs and arrives close to the original times: within one to four hours, depending on notice.

  • The flight was cancelled for operational reasons.

Vague “operational reasons” usually mean staff or aircraft shortages, which the airline has to absorb. Ask for the specific cause in writing.

Compensation

How much TAROM owes you

The amount is fixed by flight distance. A €20 promo fare and a flexible business ticket are worth exactly the same.

Up to 1,500 km

€250

e.g. Dublin–London, Barcelona–Paris

1,500–3,500 km

€400

e.g. London–Athens, Madrid–Warsaw

Over 3,500 km

€600

e.g. Frankfurt–New York, Paris–Doha

Flights within the EU over 1,500 km are always paid at €400.
