Claiming from Iberia: what to know

Iberia is Spain's flag carrier and part of IAG alongside British Airways, Aer Lingus and Vueling, with its hub at Madrid-Barajas. As an EU airline it is bound by EU 261 on flights into, out of and within Europe, including long-haul flights from Latin America.

Before you claim

  1. 01

Flights with IB numbers may be operated by Iberia Express or Air Nostrum (Iberia Regional). You claim against the operating airline — all are Spanish EU carriers.

  2. 02

Flights from Latin America into Madrid are covered because Iberia holds an EU licence. A delay of four hours or more from Bogotá or Buenos Aires is worth €600.

  3. 03

Air traffic control strikes usually count as extraordinary circumstances; strikes by Iberia's own staff don't.

Coverage

Which Iberia flights are covered

What counts is the route and the airline's licence — not where you bought the ticket, what you paid or which passport you hold.

  • Departing an EU/EEA airport

To any destination in the world

    Covered
  • Arriving in the EU/EEA from outside

Only when the airline holds an EU licence

    Covered
  • Within the EU/EEA

    Domestic and international flights

    Covered
  • Departing a UK airport

Under UK 261: £220 to £520 per passenger

    Covered

Iberia holds an EU operating licence, so it owes compensation on flights into Europe from outside as well.

Compensation

How much Iberia owes you

The amount is fixed by flight distance. A €20 promo fare and a flexible business ticket are worth exactly the same.

Up to 1,500 km

€250

e.g. Dublin–London, Barcelona–Paris

1,500–3,500 km

€400

e.g. London–Athens, Madrid–Warsaw

Over 3,500 km

€600

e.g. Frankfurt–New York, Paris–Doha

Per passenger — for arrival delays of three hours or more, short-notice cancellations and denied boarding.

Flights within the EU over 1,500 km are always paid at €400.

Common pushback

What Iberia may say — and what the law says

A rejection is where most claims start, not where they end. These are the replies we challenge most often.

  • “It was a technical problem.”

Faults found during normal operation are part of running an airline. Courts rarely accept them as extraordinary circumstances.

  • “The weather was bad.”

Only weather that made your specific flight unsafe counts. We check the claim against meteorological and airport records.

  • “The aircraft arrived late from its previous flight.”

A knock-on delay only excuses the airline if the original cause was itself extraordinary — and the airline has to prove it.

  • “Our crew went on strike.”

A strike by the airline's own staff is within its control. The European Court of Justice has ruled it does not exempt the carrier.

  • “We already gave you meal vouchers.”

Meals, hotels and rebooking are care, not compensation. Accepting them never waives your right to be paid.

FAQ

Iberia compensation questions

Still unsure? Check your flight for free — it takes two minutes and commits you to nothing.

How much compensation can I get from Iberia?

Between €250 and €600 per passenger, depending on flight distance. Delays must be three hours or more at arrival, and cancellations must be announced less than 14 days before departure. What you paid for the ticket makes no difference.

Can I claim from Iberia myself?

Yes, filing with Iberia directly is free. Many passengers come to us because first claims are often rejected or ignored — we handle the follow-up, the regulator and court if needed, and only charge if you get paid.

How far back can I claim against Iberia?

It depends on the country where the claim is filed. Limitation periods are set nationally and range from about one year to six years, so flights from the last few years are often still claimable. Check yours for free.

Iberia rebooked me or gave me vouchers. Can I still claim?

Usually, yes. Rebooking, meals and hotel rooms are duties of care and don't replace compensation. Only an agreement where you explicitly gave up your compensation would change that.

How long does Iberia take to pay?

Straightforward claims are often settled within a few weeks to a few months. If Iberia refuses and the claim goes to a regulator or court, it can take longer. We keep you updated at every step.

What if Iberia blames extraordinary circumstances?

Ask for specifics. Severe weather, air traffic control restrictions and security threats can be extraordinary, but technical faults and strikes by the airline's own staff usually aren't. We check the explanation against independent data before accepting it.
